OLER 230-001 Expedition Sea Kayaking 3 credits

The Sea Kayak Expedition course is focused on helping the student learn to travel safely and efficiently by sea kayak. The course includes introductory navigation, boat lean and edging, rolling, kayak maneuvers, equipment, loading, expedition planning and behavior and open water rescues. Entire class will be held during a long distance sea kayak expedition on one of the larger lakes of the Southwest. Graduates of this course should be capable of planning and paddling a multi day Sea Kayak trip. This is an ACA Skills class and successful participant will earn an ACA Card of completion.
Course meets in classroom on Wednesday, May 16 from 8:00 am pm to 5:00 pm and will plan many aspects of the expedition. Overnight Trip: Thursday, May 17 through Tuesday May 22. Lab fee of $120.00 covers transportation, food while on overnight, and equipment.
OLER 177-001 Rafting 2 credits

Students will acquire skills and knowledge necessary to independently plan and carry out a successful rafting outing. Course content includes raft equipment for paddle and oar rafts, rowing/paddle techniques, instruction and practice of basic rafting technique, rigging, river dynamics and river-reading skills, basic rescue, and handling river related emergencies. This course will prepare students to effectively row or paddle class I to III whitewater. This course is an American Canoe Association basic rafting course. Students will receive an ACA course completion card. This course will meet Physical Education activity requirement for AA degree. Class will be in the Classroom in the morning of 5/31 and may leave for the field on 5/31 through 6/4.

The Expedition Rafting course is focused on planning all aspects of a multi day rafting expedition. Student will learn to travel safely and efficiently by Whitewater Raft, topics including boat control and efficient rowing, raft maneuvers, equipment, loading, expedition planning and behavior, wilderness ethics, LNT and rescues will be covered. The entire class will be held during a long distance rafting expedition on one of the beautiful and dynamic rivers of the southwest depending on water levels. Graduates of this course should be capable of planning and paddling a multi day raft trip. This is an ACA Skills class and successful participant will earn an ACA Card of completion.
Course meets in classroom on Wednesday June 6 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Overnight Expedition: Thursday June 14 through Wednesday June20. Lab fee of $150.00 covers transportation, food while on overnight, permit fees and equipment.
OLER 265-001 AMGA Single Pitch Instructor (SPI) 3 credits

The American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA) Single Pitch Instructor Course (SPI) emphasizes the technical and education proficiency necessary to safely and professionally instruct rock climbing and climbing related activities in a group setting. The course is designed for outdoor instructors, aspiring guides, and climbers who facilitate top rope climbing programs in group settings such as camps, schools, universities, therapeutic groups and climbing schools. This class will prepare you to take the AMGA SPI Exam which will conclude this course. This course does not meet Physical Education activity requirement for AA degree. Semester Offered–Summer.
Class will meet Friday June 8 to Sunday June 10 from 8:00 to 6:00 each day for the SPI Development Class. SPI Exam will be held Saturdau July 7 to Sunday July 8 from 8:00-6:00. Entire Class will be held in Durango. Lab Fee Covers AMGA Membership and Class/Certification Fees
OLER 176-001 Whitewater Kayaking 2 credits

This course will introduce students to whitewater kayaking by covering the basic skills and safety techniques. Emphasis will be on river reading techniques, strokes, safety, self-rescue, and rescue of others. This course will prepare students to effectively “run” class II-III whitewater. This class is an American Canoe Association whitewater kayak course; a course completion card is available. This course will meet Physical Education activity requirement for AA degree.
Class will be in the classroom and field each day from 9:00-6:00, June 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, July 1.
OLER 299-001 Apostle Islands Expedition Sea Kayak (Lake Superior) 4 credits

Join the OLER program for this exciting expedition class to paddle the Apostle Island National Lakeshore in Lake Superior WI. The Apostle Islands consist of 22 Islands off the Bayfield Peninsula in Northern Wisconsin. The islands are an aspiring sea kayakers dream. Clear cool water, open crossings, wonderful camping locations, sea caves, fishing opportunities and fantastic wildlife all merge to make the Apostle Islands unforgettable. This is an ACA skills class and successful participant will earn an ACA card of completion up to Level IV. Lab fee covers air fair from Albuquerque to Minniapolis MN and back, Trasportation from Minniapolis Air Port to the Apostle Islands and back, permit fees, food and equipment for the 7 day sea kayak expedition.
Class will have a pre-meeting on and Monday June 11, 25 and July 2, 5:30 to 9:30. Field class will leave ABQ on July 10 and Return to Albuquerque on July 17.
OLER 245-001 ACA Raft Instructor 3 credits

The American Canoe Association (ACA) Raft instructor course prepares you to be a whitewater raft instructor. This course will develop and test student’s proficiencies in Safety Awareness, Technical Knowledge, Paddling/Rowing Skills and Technique, and Teaching Ability. Completion of the class does not guarantee that you will become certified. Certification will be dependent upon your teaching ability and rafting skills. This course does not meet Physical Education activity requirement for AA degree.
Course meets in classroom on Wednesday July 11 from 6:00-9:00 pm. Class will be in the field and classroom July 12 through Sunday July 15 from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm. Lab fee of $150.00 covers 1 year ACA membership and Instructor Certification dues.
OLER 171-001 Flat and Whitewater Canoeing 2 credits

ACA Canoe course focuses on helping the student learn to travel safely and efficiently by canoe. Emphasis on stroke and paddle mechanics, maneuvering including corrected forward strokes, cross strokes as well as paddling on flat water will encompass the first 3 days of the course The second 3 days will focus is on learning about river features and hazards, how to handle capsizes on the river, more advanced rescues, how to do eddy turns, surfs and ferries, how to scout, keys to good judgment, clothing and much more.
Course meets in classroom on Friday July 13 at 9:00am. Field sessions are Saturday July 14, Sunday July 15 and Friday July 20 through Sunday July 22.
OLER 250-001 Expedition Backpacking 3 credits
(Leave No Trace Master Educator Course)

If you enjoy hiking and/or backpacking then this class is a must. Through hike one of the exceptional trails in New Mexico or Colorado while learning all that is required to plan and initiate a long distance backpacking expedition. Class will plan and prep during two classroom session prior to the field expedition. Class will be in remote areas at high elevation for most of the field class. Students must be in good physical condition and able to carry up to 60lbs for extended amounts of time. Successful students in this class will also earn the Leave No Trace Master Educator Certificate.
Class pre-trip meeting on Tuesday July 10 from 5:30-8:30. Field class is Thursday July 19 through July 25.
OLER 260-001 Advanced Rock Climbing 3 credits

The Advanced Rock Climbing course will introduce students to the concepts of planning and execution a destination climbing expedition. This class will explore the wide variety of climbing opportunities. The entire class will be held in the field and a multitude of climbing areas will be explored depending on group, weather, and class goals. Students will be exposed to all types of climbing from Bouldering to Traditional Lead climbing depending on the area. Students will also learn expedition behavior and planning, crag safety, LNT, philosophies of ethics in leadership, navigation and adventure climbing techniques. This course will prepare students to take that next step towards AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Certification.
A pre-trip meeting will be held on Monday July 23 from 5:30-7:30 pm. Field outing will be from Friday July 27 to Thursday August 2.
OLER 299-002 International Trekking and Maasai Culture Immersion 6 credits

This course will introduce the experienced backpacker/mountaineer to the skills of high altitude international mountaineering. A broad range of skills and knowledge that are essential to the practice of mountaineering will be covered. Topics include the alpine environment, route finding and navigation, movement over snow, ice, and rock, rope systems, equipment selection, safety, and evacuation procedures. International travel topics will include, logistics, permits, and travel regulations. This class includes an immersion into the Maasai culture which will include discussions on Maasai economics, lifestyle, and culture sustainability. Students will get a chance to visit Maasai land, visit with Maasai elders, and participation in traditional Maasai bush dinners.
