Certifications and Trainings

Through the Outdoor Leadership, Education, and Recreation Program, students have the opportunity to earn numerous nationaly recognized certifications and trainings. These certifications are available to Students, Faculty, Staff, and the Community. 

 

ACA Course Completion Cards

  • Rafting (Paddle and Oar)
  • Canoeing
  • Whitewater Kayaking

Students will acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to independently plan and carry out a successful boat outing with a focus on rowing or paddling. The rafting and kayaking courses will prepare students to effectively row Class I to III whitewater. The courses are an American Canoe Association basic oarrafting, whitewater kayaking, and canoeing. Students will receive an ACA course completion card.

 

 

ACA Whitewater Raft Instructor

The American Canoe Association (ACA) Raft instructor course prepares you to be a whitewater raft instructor. This course will develop and test student’s proficiencies in Safety Awareness, technical knowledge, paddling/rowing skills and technique, and teaching ability. Completion of the class does not guarantee that you will become certified. Certification will be dependent upon your teaching ability and rafting skills.

 

 

 

AIARE Avalanche Level I & AIARE Avalanche Level II

Designed to teach the basics of the avalanche phenomenon. Students will learn how to recognize potential hazards and how to evaluate snow pack conditions. The use of avalanche beacons, probe lines and searching techniques will be covered both in classroom sessions and in the field through simulated rescue situations. Upon successful completion of course students will be certified as Avalanche Level I or Avalanche Level II through American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE).

 

 

 

 

 

 

AMGA Single Pitch Instructor

This program is for current, active rock climbers that have a real desire to teach the rock climbing to novices in a single pitch setting. Candidates should be passionate rock climbers, regularly climb and have been rock climbing outdoors for at least 12 months. Candidates could be current University Professors that teach climbing, Climbing Instructors, Scout Leaders, Summer Camp Professionals or climbers that wish to achieve additional training, experience and certification to gain employment as a Climbing Instructor in the Outdoor Industry.  People who successfully complete this course may be ready to take the American Mountain Guide Association's Single Pitch Instructor test.

 

 

 

 

 

Leave No Trace Trainer Certificate

Participants receive introductory training in Leave No Trace skills and ethics in a condensed two-day format. The Trainer Course assists the student participants in learning more about the seven principles of Leave No Trace and techniques for disseminating these low impact skills. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Leave No Trace Trainer Certificate.

 

 

 

 

Swiftwater Rescue Technician

Intensive course designed to teach students the necessary skills and techniques involved with river rescue situations. Experience with whitewater activities is recommended! Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive a nationally recognized certification as a Whitewater Rescue Technician through Rescue Three International.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Wilderness First Aid  or  Wilderness First Responder

These courses are designed for students who will be working with groups in the backcountry setting at a professional level. Course content will address the issues of long-term patient care, survival skills and backcountry rescue techniques. Upon successful completion, students will receive Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certifications and a CPR certification through Wilderness Medicine Training Center (WMTC).
