When it comes to competing in today’s job market, having a high school diploma is critical. However, for some adults, life’s challenges, limited time or myriad of other issues may have created road blocks to completing their high school education.
Now, there may be an additional online option. The Adult Education Program at San Juan College has been selected by the New Mexico Higher Education Department to pilot a distance learning program, which would prepare adult students, ages 16 and up, to complete the General Education Development Exam (GED®).
San Juan College was one of five Adult Education Programs chosen from throughout the state to pilot the online learning option. Others included Dona Ana Community College, Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell, Eastern New Mexico University-Ruidoso, and ABQ GED®.
“We are excited to bring this opportunity to the area,” says Jenny Lambert, interim director of the San Juan College Adult Education Program. “While we currently offer face-to-face instruction, we understand that having the online option might be more conducive for others – especially for those who may live in rural areas, have limited access to transportation or childcare assistance.”
“The online option is especially beneficial for those students who are self-motivated, independent learners, and who basically need a little extra coaching,” she continues.
Through a selection process, the program will accept 50 students into the program. Prospective students will be provided with a schedule and list of tasks and assignments to be completed in a specified timeframe. Prior to starting the 10-week online class, students would also be required to attend one of three, eight-hour new student orientations, which will be held December 2, December 9, or January 6, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the San Juan College 30th Street Annex Campus, 3539 East 30th Street, Suite 104. The new distance learning class will begin on January 20.
“We are in the business of changing lives and empowering individuals to reach new heights – professionally and academically,” Lambert adds. “This online option provides one additional avenue to help adult students take that next step in achieving their goals.”
