M.E. Katirgis

Portraits and Places

January 15 through February 15, 2004

In her photography Katirgis elevates the lowly, the land and its quiet beauty, the people living close to the land.

The exhibit begins with the Minnesota series, photographs of a small farming community where Katirgis grew up. It goes on to photos of the Southwest where she now lives, and also includes an overseas portfolio, from the time when she was more intent on photographing the faces of people than the landscape.

Katirgis says, “The brevity of man’s life upon the earth and the changing seasons and cycles in the earth are common themes in my work.”

All the photographs in the exhibit are printed on silver gelatin paper. Many are toned.
